Curtin and the Western Australian Government’s learning partnership is helping incarcerated people obtain university qualifications, to facilitate a better future with career opportunities.

Although many prisoners recognise the benefits of education, and are motivated to restart their education, the challenges are daunting. Beyond being unable to attend external classes, prisoners often can’t access typical study resources – internet, textbooks, and multimedia – and may struggle with digital literacy.

Curtin’s teaching staff provide flexible support to help incarcerated students access resources and complete learning tasks.

In 2022, almost 60 prisoners at Bandyup Women’s Prison obtained approval to study Curtin courses. Dr Adam Tomison, Director General of the Department of Justice, said the Department was proud to work with an organisation passionate about educating prisoners. “The University continues to show its commitment to prisoner learning,” Dr Tomison said.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said, “By working in partnership with the Department, we hope we can deliver better outcomes for those who are incarcerated and provide more options and enhanced opportunities for them in the future.”

Courses include Commerce and Business Administration degrees from the Faculty of Business and Law, with Health Sciences, Humanities, and Science and Engineering faculties also offering courses.

One incarcerated student expressed gratitude:

“Before my enrolment at Curtin, I experienced a terrible year in my education journey. I was exited from my bachelor degree at another university, as incarcerated students are not permitted to complete degrees in Business or Commerce. I enrolled in another business degree but was ejected mid-semester when that university realised I was an incarcerated student. I felt disheartened and that perhaps I did not belong at university.

“Since becoming a Curtin student I have been overwhelmed by the kindness, understanding and support I’ve received from Curtin Faculty of Business and Law staff. They’ve inspired me to achieve more and become the best student I can be. I feel proud to be a Curtin student and I really appreciate your support.”
