This core unit provides a substantive understanding of the key issues in sustainability at a global, national and personal level. We look at where we have come from, where we are now and what are our visions of the future. Topics include: climate change, water depletion and management, food security, art and sense of place, recreation and lifestyle, Indigenous justice, energy and peak oil, biodiversity, poverty, population and consumption.

This unit examines cities around the world from within a sustainability framework. It discusses automobile dependence, urban design, transport systems, suburban sprawl and environmental technologies. As part of the unit students will complete a project developing a vision of sustainability for a city.

This unit examines the core concepts of urban design in relation to sustainability. A practical field exercise enables students to utilise their knowledge and skills in a professional setting.

This unit explores the role of deliberative democracy in achieving sustainability. In this practical unit students learn how, why and when to run a broad range of deliberative democracy techniques including a citizens jury, consensus forum, deliberative survey, 21st century dialogue, world café and open space technology.

The movement towards sustainability requires a whole new set of processes, and therefore a new set of critical concepts underpinning these processes. We examine pathways that enable the development and implementation of sustainability, such as change and transition management theory, reflexive governance; policy development and learning, sustainability planning and social learning. Students will develop both specific skills and understanding of the theories behind these skills.

This unit will examine ways of reducing the carbon footprints of our cities and regions through various new technologies, lifestyle changes, urban and regional planning approaches and end-user policies. This unit will provide skills in decarbonising the economy, particularly in relation to students' own households and local communities.

This unit introduces the basic science of climate change and discusses the various approaches, policies and mechanisms used to target emissions with a focus on the global and national levels. Policies such as emission trading schemes and carbon taxes are examined as well as climate change governance including the international climate change negotiations process.

In this unit students explore the role of leadership within an organisation and how this impacts upon achieving sustainability. It looks at why governments and businesses need to address sustainability at all levels of organisation.

This unit explores Indigenous sustainability, the changing use of our coasts, sustainable tourism and what the future holds in the face of climate change and coastal adaptation. Students will engage, through four on-country fieldtrips, with Indigenous history and culture on the Western Australian coast. They will develop an appreciation of cultural difference and the drivers of changing coastal practices and cultures.

Students undertake a supervised independent project either individually or in collaboration with other students in an area approved by the supervisor. On discussion with the course supervisor students may also work with professionals in a workplace on a current sustainability policy or project.

Students enrolled the Masters course will be required to complete a dissertation. The Advanced Individual Projects can be completed separately or combined into one single dissertation. Projects will be supervised and topics will be should relate closely to sustainability.
