The Human Dimension in Urban Design- Central Perth

CUSP has been privileged to host a short course with the famous international urban designer Jan Gehl. This has been a very special opportunity to work with one of the world’s greatest urban designers. It has been a partnership project between CUSP, the City of Perth, Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) and Gehl Architects. It means that we have learned a lot but most of all there will be some tangible results at the end of the work. This site is designed to make available to students and the general public the material that was presented by Jan Gehl, Jan Scheurer and Peter Newman as part of the course. It also contains the original study done by Jan Gehl in 1993 and student material as it becomes available on the project.

The work aims to:

1. Learn about the qualities of good urban design.
2. Learn how to measure these qualities and evaluate them against best practice.
3. Gain experience in urban design through team work.
4. Contribute to understanding about what will make a better city centre in Perth.

About the course

The course was run intensively from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th October with data collection occurring on all days and on Tuesday 28th.
