Protected Natural Areas and Indigenous Peoples: Argentina conservation strategies
Presenter: Adriana Aleksa
Date: Thursday 20th October
Time: 11:30am
Venue: 3 Pakenham St. Fremantle
Abstract
National Parks and other protected areas have proved to be an important instrument for in situ conservation of natural ecosystems and their biodiversity. This presentation examines how conservation strategies in Argentina have changed since the first protected natural area in 1904. Objectives, management and policy issues have evolved following global scientific and social trends along the last century. In consequence, the practices have moved from a preservation ideal to an attempt to balance conservation and development. Current strategies include indigenous community participation, as an integration of cultural and ecological diversity for a sustainable conservation and, in recognition of indigenous rights.
